Interpreting - AMPERSOUND Translate Media

Interpreting

Interpreting consists of transmitting an oral discourse in one language into an equivalent in another. It is one of the world’s oldest activities, and today can be subdivided into a wide range of forms:

  • Conference interpreting: At meetings between professionals in the same sector.
  • Judicial interpreting: This takes place in courts of law or administrative tribunals (not to be confused with legal or sworn).
  • Escort interpreting: In this case, the interpreter accompanies an individual or group of people during a visit, meeting or interview.
  • Community interpreting: This takes place in the legal and health spheres, plus, of course, social services, housing and education.

In addition, interpreting can follow a number of different techniques, including the following:
  • Simultaneous interpreting: In this case, the interpreter translates the message from a booth at the same time as it is being delivered in the original language, and without interrupting the speaker. The audience is required to wear headphones to listen to the interpreter.
  • Consecutive interpreting: Here, notes are taken. The speaker delivers the discourse in segments, pausing periodically. The interpreter makes a note of what has been said and then translates each time the speaker pauses.
  • Whispered interpreting: The interpreter is among the audience (a very small group) and whispers the translation while the discourse is being delivered.
  • Bilateral or liaison interpreting: In this case, the interpreter facilitates a conversation between two or more people.
  • Telephone or video interpreting: This is a relatively recent development, in which the interpreter does not need to be physically present to assist the speaker or listener. Instead, the translation is given over the telephone or by videoconference.
  • Sight translation: The interpreter reads aloud a document written in a foreign language, delivering the message in the target language.
